How do I Marble and Layer with resin?

A marble effect is a popular choice when pouring polyester resin into a mould.

The method is quite easy but the technique requires some practice

When estimating the amount you will need, remember there must be a little more than you think you will need, as some loss of material is inevitable.

    Step 1.

Mix your chosen resin and catalyst and divide it into as many mixing pots as you want colours.

(ie. 3 colours will need 3 separate pots)

Mix a small amount of each pigment into each pot with the resin and stir in thoroughly.

At this point there are many ways you can easily achieve very different effects

Below is a list of ways you may pour the coloured resins.

Step 2.

For a traditional marble effect pour all the colours back into one pot and stir once.

As you pour the resin into the mould you will notice the colours are not completely mixed and looks streaky. As the resin settles the colours blend very subtly creating a marble-like colouring, complete with depth and ‘veins’ of colour.

Pour the mixture into the mould. Some may choose to pour into one spot and allow the resin to flow across the mold while others may pour the resin into different spots in the mold. The technique used to pour the resin will affect the final look of the casting.

We choose to pour the resin in one spot and allow it to flow across the mould.

Step 3.

Keeping the colours separate, pour in a little of one colour straight into the mould. Immediately pour a little of another colour, then another colour, and so on. Until the mould is full. Remember that the more colour you pour at once the larger the bands of colour will be. This will give you a casting similar to the design of camouflage.
